Parents feel shock, anxiety and the need to protect children with genital ambiguity

Parents of babies born without clearly defined male or female genitals experience a roller-coaster of emotions, including shock, anxiety and the need to protect their child. Researchers who spoke to 15 parents found that they were keen to find a sense of harmony between their child’s genital ambiguity and the sex they raised them as. All the children had disorders of sex development, which include conditions where the chromosomes, testicles, ovaries or sexual anatomy are not as expected. It’s estimated that one in 300 babies are born with concerns about the development of their external genitalia and in one in 5,000 births the baby’s sex is unclear despite expert examination.

Free floating anxiety

Free floating anxiety

It’s 4:24 a.m. I was still awake at 11:30 p.m. last night, then again at around 3 a.m. this morning. I have been anxious, restless. I have been in pain.

The great thing about not having to see a doctor for a while after treatment, any kind of treatment for breast cancer, whether it’s surgery or chemo or radiation, or some other form of intensive treatment is just that: you do not have to see a doctor for a while. And for anyone who’s been on the doc circuit, you know how gratifying this is – you are free. Free! Schedule your life around YOU! It feels awesome, for a while.
The bad thing about not having to see a doctor for a while after treatment is that you don’t have anyone checking up on you. You are cut loose. You’ve been through major medical, in some cases a life and death situation, and you are on. your. own. And when stuff changes, and things comes up, you’re left to your own devices with your mind, and Doctor Google at your bedside. Read the rest of this entry »

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder and a serious mental health condition.

People with anorexia have problems with eating. They are very anxious about their weight and keep it as low as possible by strictly controlling and limiting what they eat. Many people with anorexia will also exercise excessively to lose weight.

It is thought that people with anorexia are so concerned about their weight because they:

  • think they are fat or overweight
  • have a strong fear of being fat
  • want to be thin

Even when a person with anorexia becomes extremely underweight, they still feel compelled to lose more weight. Read the rest of this entry »

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa

My first view of her is always in profile, slumped in the chair, eyes cast into her lap in a tired gaze. Darting between exam rooms, my own unfocused glance registers a form without mass—an unfurled S melts from the chair to the floor. Medium length hair, uneven at the ends, falls limply down her back. Hair, skin, eyes, clothing drained of color. The room takes on a listless yellow hue.
Even before her name registers in my consciousness I’m gripped by a tightness in my stomach. A familiar dread washes over me.  After 30 years of practicing primary care I am used to the hard things—pain, suffering, deprivation, violence, loss, hardship, injustice. I can usually find my footing in delivering bad news, receiving patients’ sadness, anger and fear. As a physician, I often feel sadness about the things I can’t control, change, or do for patients, but I can usually find a way to take some next steps. Read the rest of this entry »

Anorexia Nervosa Symptoms Reduced by Massage

Massage alleviates anxiety, depression, eating disorder symptoms, poor body image and biochemical abnormalities for women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, according to a recent research study.

Antiviral drugs used to combat herpes virus infections could slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study suggests.

The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), which causes most cold sores, has previously been tied to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

In the study, cells infected with HSV1 showed a buildup of the proteins known to damage the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. Treating the cells with the antiviral drug acyclovir significantly reduced the accumulation of these proteins. Read the rest of this entry »
