Expanded Cancer Institute and Penn Radiation Oncology
Doylestown Hospital Offers the Community Integrated Cancer Care
Doylestown Hospital continues to grow in size and services to keep pace with the latest in proven technology and care. Yet this newest expansion directly relates to the hospital’s original mission to “improve the quality of life for all members of our community.”
Doylestown Hospital is poised to open its expanded Cancer Institute in early May. Radiation Oncology Doylestown, a facility of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, has already opened its doors, adding an additional dimension to integrated cancer care in one convenient location.
Members of the community are invited to an Open House on Saturday, May 7 from 1 to 4 pm.
The expanded Cancer Institute of Doylestown Hospital is located on the third floor of an addition to the Pavilion, which is adjacent to the hospital. The new space is twice the size of the Institute’s former location. Patients may choose a private infusion room or an open setting for their treatments. The new space also includes doctors’ offices, an onsite pharmacy and research offices. Additionally, The Cancer Institute incorporates MRI, PET/CT, endoscopy, and the Women’s Diagnostic Centers of Doylestown Hospital.
The first floor of the new addition houses the radiation oncology facility. The second and third floors are devoted to physician offices and services for cancer patients.
Devita, Hellman, and Rosenberg’s Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology
DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg’s Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology has been acclaimed by the worldwide medical community as the standard-setting oncology reference. Its primary goal is to present the practicing oncologist with the practical as well as cutting-edge information needed to ensure the best possible care for each individual patient. The hallmark of this book from its inception and a major reason it has gained worldwide acceptance as the definitive source of cancer information has been its approach to the treatment of cancer patients by stage of presentation with a tightly coordinated description of the role of each treatment modality in the care of individual patients. To ensure a balance multidisciplinary approach, a surgeon, a medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist author each of the major treatment chapters. Each of the major treatment sections is preceded by an updated, brief chapter describing the molecular biology of that cancer and the prospects this new information holds for the improved management of cancer patients. Greater emphasis has been given in recent editions to the increasing importance of molecular biology and cancer screening and prevention, as well as palliative care, supportive oncology and quality of life issues.

HEART: Kelly Carpenter colon cancer survivor& oncology nurse
As a nursing student, Kelly knew all too well the devastation of a cancer diagnosis. So when she was told she had colon cancer just one week after graduation, she was shocked. Kelly had “done all the right things.” She was physically fit, ate right and was only 28 years old. The Young Survivors Support Group was just taking shape and she was able to reach out to other survivors as only someone who has lived this experience can. Kelly continues to support other survivors as a nurse in oncology, but she also took this traumatic event and made it into a rallying cry. After chemo she organized a fundraiser called “Good Riddance to Cancer.” This event raised over $4,000. It was donated to the Cancer Patient Support Program and was used to reach other young survivors through therapy, emergency funding and nutritional information. Kelly also climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2009 as a fundraiser for the Love Hope Strength foundation.
